This page is just for the graphic arts educators.
I taught design and desktop publishing for several years, and I understand the challenges of creating projects that are fun and interesting for the students to work on, and that give them real-world skills they can apply later in their careers. I developed a curriculum supplement that can help you tremendously. I also offer a student coursebook and a software plug-in for your computer labs. Please feel free to contact teachers@foldfactory.com for educational pricing packages.

Lesson #1: How Paper Affects Folding
Paper is, by far, the most important factor in the folding process. Paper choice is not only for aesthetics, but also for practicality. The wrong paper choice on a folded piece can produce a disappointing result. For example, a large-sized brochure printed on thin paper is floppy, and a big, folded poster printed on thick paper is wrinkled and won't lay flat. Much consideration and often the advice of your printer or paper representative is required to make the right choice. It is essential to understand the characteristics of paper before we can understand how it performs in the folding process.

Good ideas for a paper lecture:

  • Call a paper representative and ask them to come in for a question and answer session and a basic overview of paper. Ask them to bring samples for the students.
  • Ask students to collect field samples of printed materials, what they would consider good and bad paper choices. Have them take turns sharing their finds and describing what is successful and unsuccessful about their choices.
  • Do an exercise in specifying paper—discuss the information that a printer needs from the designer, such as brand, finish, color, weight, etc. Also discuss why one might choose certain weights for certain applications, i.e. direct mail, uses for cover weights, text weights, C1S stock.

Spotlight on: Claudia McCue
InDesign trainer, consultant, author of Real World Print Production, and FOLDRite Template Master user Claudia McCue states, "FOLDRite Template Master is not just a great idea, it's beautifully implemented. Not only is it a fool-proof tool for generating pieces that fold correctly, it's educational: It provides cautions regarding stock weight, bindery issues, and postal considerations. The panel cues and guidelines instruct the designer in correct art placement. And the animated folding example for each type of piece enables the designer to visualize the physical folding process. I love it!"
